If you've been thinking about aesthetic treatment but haven't taken the plunge yet, chances are it's not because you don't want to — it's because you're not sure what to expect. That uncertainty is completely normal, and it's something I hear from first-time clients every week.
So here's exactly what happens when you come to JW Aesthetics for the first time, from start to finish. No surprises.
Before your appointment
When you book online, you'll select the treatment you're interested in. Don't worry too much about choosing the "right" one — part of the consultation is working out together what's actually going to give you the best result. Many people book for one thing and end up having something different after we've talked it through properly.
In the days leading up to your appointment, try to avoid alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil supplements, and vitamin E for 24–48 hours. These can increase bruising. If you're on any prescribed blood thinners, don't stop them — just let me know and we'll factor it in.
The consultation
Every first appointment starts with a conversation. Not a sales pitch — an actual conversation about what's bothering you, what you'd like to change, and what your expectations are. I'll ask about your medical history, current medications, allergies, and any previous aesthetic treatments you've had.
This is also where I'll be honest with you. If I think a different treatment would serve you better than what you've asked for, I'll tell you. If I think you don't need treatment at all, I'll tell you that too. My job is to give you the best advice, not to sell you the most expensive option.
We'll discuss what the treatment involves, what results you can realistically expect, any potential risks or side effects, and how long recovery takes. You'll have the chance to ask anything you want. Nothing is a stupid question.
Consent and preparation
If you decide to go ahead, you'll sign a consent form. This isn't just a formality — it's confirmation that you've understood what's being done, the risks, the alternatives, and the expected outcomes. I'll also take before photos for your records.
Depending on the treatment, I may apply numbing cream to the area and let it take effect for 15–20 minutes. For some treatments this isn't necessary, but for lip filler or sensitive areas, it makes a real difference to comfort.
The treatment itself
This is usually quicker than people expect. Anti-wrinkle injections might take 15 minutes. Filler can be 30–45 minutes depending on the areas being treated. I'll talk you through what I'm doing as I go — where each injection is going and why.
Discomfort varies by treatment and area. Most people describe anti-wrinkle injections as a tiny pinch. Filler involves slightly more pressure but is very manageable, especially with numbing cream. Nobody has ever told me it was as bad as they expected.
Aftercare
Once the treatment is complete, I'll give you full written aftercare instructions. These are specific to what you've had done, not a generic handout. For most injectable treatments, the key points are to avoid touching or massaging the treated area for a few hours, skip intense exercise and alcohol for 24 hours, and avoid extreme heat (saunas, hot baths) for 48 hours.
You'll also get my direct contact number. If anything concerns you in the days after treatment — even if you think it's nothing — you can message me. I'd always rather hear from you unnecessarily than have you worrying at home.
Follow-up
A follow-up review is included with every treatment, usually 2–4 weeks later. For anti-wrinkle injections, this lets me assess the result and make any adjustments if needed. For filler, it's a chance to check you're happy with the outcome and discuss whether any additional volume would benefit you.
There's no obligation to have further treatment. No subscription. No pressure. If you're happy, great. If you want to adjust something, we will. If you decide aesthetics isn't for you, that's completely fine too.
The best aesthetic results come from building a relationship with your practitioner over time — understanding your face, your preferences, and what works for you. That first appointment is just the beginning of that conversation.
