Relfydess: Is It Worth the Sting?

If you've had anti-wrinkle injections before, you'll know the routine: treatment every 3–4 months, results kicking in around day 7–14, and a gradual return of movement as the product wears off. It works. But when Relfydess came along, I had to take a serious look — because the clinical data suggested something genuinely different.

After using it on a significant number of clients over the past few months, I'm now comfortable calling it my preferred botulinum toxin. Here's why.

What makes Relfydess different?

Relfydess (relabotulinumtoxinA) is made by Galderma — the same company behind the Restylane filler range and Sculptra. It's the first ready-to-use liquid botulinum toxin, which means it doesn't require reconstitution before injection. That might sound like a minor technical detail, but it matters.

Traditional toxins come as a powder that needs to be mixed with saline before use. The ratio, the mixing technique, even how vigorously you swirl the vial — all of these can introduce subtle variability in dosing. Relfydess eliminates that entirely. Every vial is pre-mixed to a precise, consistent concentration. As a pharmacist, that level of pharmaceutical consistency is something I genuinely value.

Faster onset

One of the most notable differences clients report is speed. Phase III clinical trial data showed that some patients noticed visible improvement within 24 hours of treatment. In my own clinic, I'd say the majority of clients are seeing meaningful softening by day 2–3, compared to the typical 7–14 day window with conventional toxins.

For clients who've booked treatment ahead of an event or holiday, that faster onset makes a real practical difference.

Longer lasting results

This is the big one. The READY and RELAX clinical trials demonstrated that Relfydess can maintain meaningful clinical effects for 5–6 months — significantly longer than the typical 3–4 months you'd expect from most botulinum toxins.

In practice, what I'm seeing is clients comfortably stretching to 5 months between appointments rather than the usual 3–4. That means fewer appointments per year, lower annual cost for the client, and — importantly — a very natural-looking return of movement rather than the "cliff edge" some people experience when their previous toxin wears off suddenly.

This is where Relfydess really earns its place in my clinic. The results look natural. Clients have movement, expression, personality — just without the deep lines. Nobody looks frozen. Nobody looks "done".

Part of this comes down to the product itself and how it diffuses, but a large part also comes down to dosing and placement. Is it worth it?

The honest answer: yes, for the right client. Relfydess isn't more expensive per treatment than the toxin I was previously using, but the extended duration means you're likely paying for fewer treatments per year. The faster onset is a genuine quality-of-life improvement. And the natural results speak for themselves.
